The Recovering Pessimist: A Pep Talk to Myself -- I have my down moments. Self-doubt creeps in and screws with my psyche. The “what ifs” creep in, bringing the self-doubt that I worked so hard to keep at bay to the surface.

Years ago, I would panic when this would happen. Now, I understand that it’s okay to have these moments. How I handled these moments when self-doubt attempted a takeover is what mattered. These days, I give myself a pep talk. Nothing fancy, just a conversation to myself from myself. Below is an example of a pep talk I wrote in my journal about a year ago. After you read it, let me know if you give yourself pep talks and what you tell yourself.

Look, I get that you’re having a down moment now and that’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up over it. You’re surrounded by some pretty awesome people who care about you and want nothing but the best for you. Lean on them. Let them help you. 

You have dreams and goals. That requires patience, which you don’t have much of. Remember, patience is necessary for your growth. Nothing in this life will happen on your time.

It’s healthy to want love in your life. Don’t seek love. Live your life. Let love come to you.

Appreciate what you see in the mirror, flaws included. Flaws make you the dope soul that you are. 

Repeat this as much as you need to until the self-doubt goes away.

When A Theory is Just A Theory

If I could change one thing about myself, I would be a patient person. Not to be confused with a more patient person; I would need to become a patient person first before I can ask for more patience.

Whew!

As I’ve gotten older, my level of patience has dwindled to non-existent. I think a lot of it stems from years spent in high-productivity jobs. Can’t have the patience of Job when the clock is ticking and quotas have to be met.

Do it and do it now.

That’s my mantra. I don’t like to wait for people to do things, especially when I know I can do it in less time. I would be a liar if I said that I was working on it. Sounds good in theory but attempts to execute the theory would fail.

Sometimes a theory should remain just that, a theory.

I was listening to “Those Who Wait” by Daley and my mind started thinking.

Do good things really come to those who wait?

The “Tortoise and the Hare” approach that I was taught as a child places emphasis on hard work and persistence. Theoretically this approach pays off, however, there is a slight drawback:  patience is the key to success.

Yeah…about that. I have an untraceable about of patience. It’s a character flaw that I’m not necessarily proud of, but I accept it. We all have flaws right? In my case, being constantly disappointed by people has left me extremely independent with a zero-tolerance policy for bullsh*t.

When you want things done at a certain time and in a certain fashion, having to patiently wait on someone to do it can be as pleasant as nails on a chalkboard. Trying to change for the better is difficult, especially when you have to now fill that empty glass of water. The next time I feel the urge to just “do it myself”, I’m just going to quietly sing the song that inspired this post.
